Hiking in Picture Rock National Lake Shore

Hiking in Picture Rock National Lake Shore

,

Waterfalls, sand dunes, colorful sandstone cliffs, and beautiful beaches on Lake Superior are things you can expect to encounter while visiting Picture Rock National Lake Shore in Michigan’s upper peninsula.

Take a scenic boat ride on Lake Superior to get the best views of the cliff walls.

Picture Rock National Lakeshore is part of the national park system. There is a fee to enter the park of $15. They do have campgrounds in the park to stay at, but if you are not into camping the town of Munising is on one side of the park and the town of Grand Marais is on the other side. I found Grand Marais to be a very cute town. It’s not as big as Munising, but I liked it more. This is a long park, so make sure you have filled up your gas tank before you go driving. The road that goes through the park didn’t have any gas stations on it when I was there. Some of the roads leading off of that main road, taking you to the trail heads, are sometimes not well maintained. We felt like we were off roading in our vehicle driving on them. The parking lots also fill up, so I recommend going early in the morning or later in the afternoon. There are many different trails to hike and many of them are less than 2 miles long. Here is a link to the national park page on day hikes. This page goes into detail about each hike, so I found it very useful.
